11 DAYS VIC FALLS TO DAR ES SALAAM

Victoria Falls to Dar-es-Salaam

This leisurely tour begins in Victoria Falls and takes you to the Indian Ocean, ending in Dar Es Salaam. From here you may choose to spend time in Zanzibar. YOu get to see the Victoria Falls, experience the tranquility of Lake Malawi and pass through unforgettable African landscapes en route to the coast!

Stage highlights:
WEEK ONE
We head via Lusaka through southern Zambia, before entering Malawi for a week of blissfully unspoilt beaches, colourful markets and famously friendly people.
WEEK TWO
Scuba diving and canoeing are a few of the many activities on offer. Leaving Malawi, we head through Mikumi before setting up camp near the beach just north of Tanzania's bustling capital, Dar es Salaam. Your arrival in Dar is the end of your tour, but you might like to join the rest of the group on their optional excursion to Zanzibar, a short ferry ride or flight up the coastline. How you spend your time on Zanzibar is entirely up to you! Awesome scuba diving, fantastic shopping and sight seeing in Stone Town, a spice tour, dolphin cruises, the list goes on... Spend a couple of leisurely days exploring this mystical place before making your way back to Dar es Salaam, from where we can arrange further onward travel.

Stage duration:11 Days

Day 1: Victoria Falls

We begin the day by driving across the border to our camp in Livingstone on the Zambian side of the Zambezi River. Spend the day enjoying the activities in Livingstone or finalising arrangements for your trip before returning to camp in the evening. (Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
Those joining us in Zimbabwe will need to be at Savanna at 8am. The truck and guides will stay at Savanna Lodge the evening prior to departure. We will leave for Zambia at 9am to collect those joining us there. The day is free for viewing the falls on either side of the river and enjoying any of the many activities on offer.

Stage duration:1 Day

Day 2: Lusaka

We leave behind the excitement of Vic Falls and head off on our expedition. Our route towards the bustling Zambian capital of Lusaka takes us along an interesting route. We set up camp and enjoy the evening relaxing after our long drive.(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
A long drive takes us to the capital of Zambia – Lusaka. We may do some shopping here and there are limited banking facilities available. Remember – USD in small denominations are best on this tour.

Stage duration:1 Day

Day 3: Chipata

Today is an early start and a drive through southern Zambia. Chipata is an ideal place to take a walk to stretch the legs. The last 200km has big potholes, which make it slow going. Please be patient as we have to drive very slowly when there are potholes to prevent us from damaging the trucks.
Optional Activities: Mountain biking etc. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
The drive from Lusaka to Chipata takes us over the Luangwa Bridge and through some beautiful countryside. We will stop for photos in a few places. Once we have arrived at the campsite you can arrange to hire mountain bikes and ride a short way down the gravel road that leads to the South Luangwa NP.

Stage duration:1 Day

Day 4 and 5: Luwawa Forest

Today we cross the border from Zambia into Malawi. We head for the Luwawa Forest, above the Great Rift Valley. You will remember this indigenous forest region for its magnificent scenery. A hike through the forest may reward you with a glimpse of some of its secretive wildlife. Keep your yellow fever certificates handy; you might need to show them at the border. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
We cross the border in to Malawi and drive up in to the highlands to Luwawa Forest – this is part of the largest man-made forest in Africa. The altitude means that it can get very cold here on winter evenings. In the summer there are small sail boats that you can sail on the dam and there are some short and long hiking trails.

Stage duration:2 Days

Day 6 and 7: Central Lake Malawi

We soon catch sight of the lake where we will spend the next couple of carefree days. For the more adventurous there are endless leisure and water sport activities. Alternatively, soak up the atmosphere and relax in one of the most scenic and memorable holiday destinations in Africa! The evenings are spent beside its tranquil waters, enjoying the party atmosphere of this famous spot.
Optional Activities: Scuba diving, parasailing, windsurfing, fishing, canoeing, horse riding and many more… (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
Today will be your first sight of Lake Malawi! Be very careful here as the mosquitoes are very bad. You might be very worried about bilharzia in the water. Bilharzia does exist in the lake but they haven’t found traces of it around Kande in recent years. You can go for a test 6 months after the tour – antibiotics will be enough to cure this! (Water from the showers is also from the lake!!!) There are many optional activities here such as horse riding, sailing, scuba diving and other water sports.

Stage duration:2 Days

Day 8 and 9: Northern Malawi

We continue a short way further along the northern part of the lake, close to the Livingstonia Mountains where we will continue our relaxation for the next day or two. Take a stroll through the nearby craft market and make friends with the friendly people of Malawi or take a hike into the mountains if the weather is favorable.
Optional Activities: A wide variety of, craft shopping, hiking and more… (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
The adventurous can go hiking up to Livingstonia or the waterfall. This is quite a tough hike and you’ll have to leave early. The return trip to the waterfall takes about 5 hours and the trip to Livingstonia 7-8 hours. You must take lunch with you as well as enough drinking water, sunscreen, hiking shoes, hat. You should also take some money as they charge entrance fee to the museum at Livingstonia.
There is abseiling here too – it can be booked through Chitimba Beach Camp.
Alternatively you can just have a relaxing day at the lakeside.

Stage duration:2 Days

Day 10: Iringa

Today we make the border crossing out of Malawi. Leaving the lake behind us, we head for our first night in Tanzania and gain an hour as we cross into the East African time zone. As we climb out of the Great Rift Valley through some spectacular mountain passes, we pass the vast tea plantations in the highlands to our camp outside Iringa. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
Tanzanian roads are in generally in a good condition, but they are also very narrow. This doesn’t slow down other heavy traffic though. In order for us to get to our destination safely the driver will have to drive slowly in places. This camp is at high altitude and can get cold.

Stage duration:1 Day

We depart for the bustling city of Dar es Salaam, the final destination of the tour. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
