Transfrontiers Game Trail 3

Day 1:-

Transfer from Johannesburg/Pretoria by microbus via the Transvaal Drakensberg to Trans Frontiers Base Camp outside the central area of the Kruger National Park. Arrive at camp and settle in to twin bedded Meru Safari tents with en suite bathrooms. Lunch is served and you can siesta or swim till the heat of the day subsides and you set off on an afternoon 'orientation' walk. Here you get to know your group and your ranger as well as how to comfortably and quietly walk trough the bush. You will also be looking for some big game on foot and have a good chance of seeing giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest, rhino and plenty of other species. As the sun sets you arrive back at the lodge for drinks before dinner.

Stage highlights:
Your first close encounter with wild animals.

Stage duration:Wednesday

Day 2:-

An early start hoping to sight some of the big cats as you head trough the Orpen gate in the central region of the Kruger National Park. Spend a day travelling ythe routes along the sandy riverbeds and Lebombo mountains of the Mozambique border looking for herds of zebra on the open plains. Stop at a picnic spot in the shade of a huge tree for a cooked breakfast and some cold orange juice. Enjoy a light lunch at one of the rest camps, leaving the park to overnight back at the base camp.

Stage highlights:
Game viewing in one of the private concessions.

Stage duration:Thursday

Day 3:-

This leisurely day starts with coffee and rusks before a visit to Kapama Endangered Species Breeding Project or Nyani tribal village, both of which are close by. Pack up after breakfast and leave for Trans Frontiers satellite trails camp. A light lunch is served before the afternoon walk. Your armed ranger takes all the precautions for your safety whilst tracking big game on foot as well as imparting information of the terrain you move trough. Dinner is ready when you return to camp and relax at the campfire for drinks. Overnight in dome safari tents with camp beds and linen supplied. The camps are small, intimate and unfenced giving you the ultimate safari. With a star studded sky and an orchestra of night sounds there is little to compare with this experience.

Stage highlights:
Walk in 'Big 5' country.

Stage duration:Friday

Day 4:-

After a hot cup of coffee at sunrise, you head out in single file looking for tracks left by animals during the night that might lead you to some close encounters with big game on foot. The dawn chorus of birdlife and fresh morning air makes for pleasant walking and a combination of information and Bushveld scenery lulls you into this ancient pattern of hoof and pad. The Big cats are here! Return to camp for breakfast, then laze around in camp during the heat of day or sit at a waterhole and watch for wildlife coming to drink. Afternoon walk/drive outings use the open 4x4 vehicle to get out to a spot to walk from. The evening finds you sipping sundowners near a waterhole and pondering an African sunset. As darkness creeps in the night drive begins in search of that elusive leopard and other creatures of this secret time. Soon the campfire welcomes you to a well-earned dinner. The call of the wild continues as stories are told and bed beckons.

Stage highlights:
Night drive in open 4x4 vehicle after sundowners at a waterhole.

Stage duration:Saturday

Day 5:-

You set off at dawn using the vehicle to get to a distant point and checking the roads for spoor as you go. If something fresh presents itself then your ranger will lead you into the bush using tracking techniques to get close to your quarry. Watching elephants at a water hole from a safe vantage point is a wonderful way to spend the morning. Breakfast and later lunch are prepared in camp and your afternoon walk /drive leaves camp as the afternoon cools slightly. It can be chilly on the open vehicle at night and its good to get back to the fire and a scrumptious dinner.
