The management and staff at Barra Reef are there to help to ensure your stay is a memorable one. We at Barra Reef are proud that our clients are sad to leave, but they are eager to return! So, in short, indulge yourself in a cost effective holiday home in paradise! The 7.5 hectare Barra Reef is situated at Praia de Barra on the inlet to Inhambane. Barra Reef lies on a sand road a short distance from the tarmac road to Tofo, 25km from the centre of Inhambane.


BARRA REEF CONSISTS OF: -

Inhambane was first founded in 1534 and is the second dest city in Mozambique. The city boasts an airport, hospital, post office, telephones, well-regarded restaurants and many places of historical interest.

Barra Reef Backpackers and Lodge has an uninterrupted 550m coconut palm-groved beach frontage with pristine crystal-clear waters on its northern boundary,
on its southern boundary, is one of the finest examples of natural mangroves in southern Africa
undulating contours which offer protection
magnificent sea views
access to a convenient and easy launching site for fishing and diving.


WHAT BARRA REEF BACKPACKERS HAS TO OFFER THE HOLIDAYMAKER: -

Great location for chilling or just relaxing,
safe bathing,
snorkeling,
diving and fishing
long walks along kilometres of magnificent beaches,
fascinating nature walks into the mosquito-free mangroves,
visits to places of interest in and around Inhambane.


AVAILABLE AT BARRA REEF: -

· Drinking water.
· Electricity - lights ( 5 - 10 pm.)
· Hot & cold tiled showers.
· Toilets.
· 24 Hour security.
· Easy access to beach.
· Char service optional at R 8-00 per day.
· A towing service for the last 3 km on soft beach sand for 2 wheel sedans will be available on request.

N.B. No electricity available for fridges.


THINGS TO DO AND PLACES OF INTEREST TO SEE: -

1. Interesting dhow trip across to Maxixe to from Inhambane Bay.
2. Nice restaurant on beach at Maxixe, basketware, sarongs and pottery available.
3. Safe swimming and fishing area at Torfu.
4. Walk along beach to lighthouse.
5. Nice restaurant at Babalaza at Barra/Torfu turnoff.
6. Superb snorkelling and diving at Barra Reef. (15km Reef.)
7. Safe snorkelling & swimming at the lighthouse.
8. Beach bar at Barra Reef.
9. Interesting walk through the swamp behind the resort. (No mosquitos) - Sea life fascinating.
10. Graveyard Inhambane.
11. Museum Inhambane.
12. Old Train Depot.
13. Execution's Rock - Tofu.
14. Fly Fishing.


DO'S AND DON'TS (What to bring along.)

· Bring Citronella oil, insect & mosquito repellants.
· One car per site, other vehicles to be parked in secured area.
· 3Rd party insurance (compulsory) available at border post + R80-00.
· Safety belts to be worn at all times while driving.
· When towing, a triangle must be displayed on the front of the towing vehicle.
· Registration car papers as well as boat or trailer papers must be displayed at border post.
· Passport/ID books.
· Visa (available at either Nelspruit or Johannesburg office or can be obtained at the border post.
· Good quality suntan lotion, as it can get very hot.
· Sunglasses & hats.
· Light clothing.
· Light track suit for evenings.
· Light jersey for evenings.
· Malaria precautions.(check with your doctor, chemist or Travel clinic!)
· Bring confirmation voucher with you.


ITEMS AVAILABLE IN TOWN: -

· Fresh fruit & veg and limited groceries available in town.
· S.A. Beer & liquor also available in town as well as locally produced liquor.
· Carvings, baskets and pottery available at the market.
· Telephone serice in town.
· Petrol, diesel & paraffin.
· "No air" Bring own air pump.
· No motor bikes allowed.
· No pets.
· Campers using generators will be situated at the back of the camp site due to noise restrictions.
· Use of gas fridges preferable or advisable.
· Do not change money at the border post.
· Money changing available at shops in Inhambane at decent rates.

Follow speed restrictions at all times.


In the interest of conservation, please refrain from purchasing coral and shells from locals.

I visited in March/April 1999. Nice relaxing place with excellent diving. Saw a school of eagle rays, several mantarays and a couple of reef sharks in ONE dive!I'm going back!
